A dog in a Halloween costume is one of the great joys of October — but the cute photo should never come at the cost of your dog's comfort. With a few simple rules, you can have both: a very good boy in a pumpkin outfit, and a very relaxed evening.

Let them get used to it first
Don't save the costume for party night. Try it on indoors a few days beforehand, keep the session short, and hand out treats while they wear it. Most dogs accept a light outfit quickly when it's introduced calmly — and you'll spot any fit issues before it matters.
Keep it light and loose
The best pet costumes are simple: soft fabric, nothing that restricts movement, hearing or breathing, and no small parts a dog could chew off. Our Halloween pet pumpkin clothes (£6.30) are a good example — a light pumpkin outfit that sits comfortably without getting in the way. It's currently 10% off until 1 November.
Know when to take it off
Pawing at the costume, freezing in place, or trying to shake it off are all clear signals: the outfit comes off, no debate. Get your photos early in the evening, then let them enjoy the night as themselves. And remember, Halloween sits right before fireworks season — if your dog finds loud noises stressful, our guide to helping your dog feel settled on Bonfire Night is worth a read.
