Lighting makes or breaks Halloween atmosphere. Overhead lights kill the mood; the right glow — warm, low, a little bit eerie — turns an ordinary room into somewhere worth celebrating. String lights are the easiest win of all.

Drape the mantel
A mantelpiece is the natural home for Halloween lights: drape them along the shelf, weave them through a garland, let them trail down the sides. Our LED willow vine string lights (£33.11), with their bat and pumpkin shapes, are made for indoor and outdoor party decor — equally happy on a bookshelf, around a doorway or across a party table. It's currently 10% off until 1 November.
Take it outside
Don't stop at the front door. Wrap lights around porch railings, wind them through bushes, or outline a window frame so the house glows from the street. Keep any plugs and connections sheltered from rain, and run cables where nobody will trip over them.
Layer your light
One light source looks flat; three looks magical. Combine your string lights with candlelight and a glowing jack-o'-lantern or two, at different heights around the room. The mix of warm points of light is what gives a Halloween evening its depth. Planning a quieter night in?
